Lower East Side Employment Network
LESEN was the brain-child of David Garza at the Henry Street Settlement; a single pool of various labor forces so that employers could do one-stop shopping when they needed help in their restaurants or factories. We needed a type treatment that would straddle the two worlds of the rapidly chic-ifying Lower East Side with the regular old pickles-in-barrels Lower East Side. I was deeply influenced by Leo Rosten’s “The Education of HYMAN KAPLAN” with the asterisks in between the letters. I thought that the logo with its almost vernacular typeface would look trustworthy to both parties. I designed stickers to go on a kraft-paper folder, and metal badges to wear. The client kept the samples.
